Hartphone

ENG-SCI 22 Design Survivor: Experiential Lessons in Designing for Desirability

Design Prompt: To re-design the headphone with a counterculture theme

Timeline: 2 weeks (includes physical production of the headphone)

Collaborators: Max Shen, Kira Telgen, Sarah Wu

A Blank Canvas:

The Hartphone embodies two aspects of counterculture: DIY and empowering nontraditional artists. Hartphones start off as a blank slate, giving users the options of filling it with an existing artworks or decorating themselves. The available artworks are created by “non-traditional” artists via ArtLifting. ArtLifting designs are made by individuals who are homeless and haven’t been exposed to art in a professional manner. The art they produce are often evocative and differ from traditional styles. In addition, part of the proceeds from the Hartphone will go towards ArtLifting, allowing homeless artists to continue making art and having access to resources.

The Hartphone was designed via SolidWorks and produced by 3D printing. The fabrication process took a week.

Rendered Hartphones:

Every Hartphone pays tribute to a particular artist's story. By wearing a Hartphone, one becomes part of that story and empowers non-traditional artists. Below are rendered representations of potential Hartphones.
